Baghaly
This piece draws inspiration from the medallions commonly woven into Lankoran and Garabakh carpets. These designs, referred to as Bagali, mean “tortoise” by traditional weavers. Some interpretations suggest the tortoise symbolizes wisdom and longevity in these carpets. It is believed that these types of medallions originate from 16th to 18th-century “Dragon rugs.” Typically, a scorpion image is woven into the medallion’s center, representing defense. Some believe that their presence taught children to be fearless, thereby reducing the risk of being stung due to attempting to shrink away from live scorpions.
