This design draws inspiration from the symbols of ancient Baku: the two lions and the ox engraved on the arch of the ‘Gosha Gala Gapilari’ (‘Twin Castle Gates’) at the main entrance to Baku’s old city. The ox represents the ancient city, while the lions symbolize the castle’s protection day and night. Furthermore, the piece features butas or paisley motifs, known as the ‘Buta of Baku’, reminiscent of patterns on Baku-woven carpets. This widespread Eastern design is typical of carpets from mountainous regions. While interpretations of its symbolism vary, the ‘Buta of Baku’ is believed to represent fire and eternity. Another version of this design highlights the Shirvanshah Palace, located within the Icheri Sheher Historical-Architectural Reserve in the old city of Baku.
