Gazakh
For centuries, Gazakh and its surrounding villages have been recognized as one of Azerbaijan’s premier carpet-weaving centers. Carpets from the Gazakh school have captivated foreign buyers with their unique ornaments and found esteemed places in museums around the globe, including the Berlin Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Hermitage, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Budapest Art Museum.
This piece is inspired by the ‘Aghajly’ carpet from Shikhly, a key part of the Gazakh carpet-weaving tradition. Shikhly carpets are regarded as quintessential examples of Azerbaijani folk art. The long central element resembles a cypress tree, a symbol of holiness in both the Middle East and Azerbaijan.
