The design pays homage to ‘Shadda’ pileless carpets woven in Nakhchivan. Fabled as the first resting-place of Noah’s ark, Nakhchivan has long been renowned for its decorative and applied arts. Cities like Nakhchivan, Ordubad, and Julpha have been carpet weaving hubs, producing both piled and pileless wool and silk carpets for centuries. As a notable Silk Road stop, the city once erected towers for protection against robbers and marauders. This crossroads of trade led to the development of a unique culture and lifestyle, reflected in the Nakhchivan carpets’ intricate ornaments. The design also draws from motifs of domestic ware found in Nakhchivan’s archaeological excavations. Additionally, ornaments from the Momine Khatun Mausoleum, crafted by the eminent medieval architect Ajami Nakhchivani, inspired a second Nakhchivan model.
