Paired Buta

These cufflinks are inspired by a variation of the famous buta motif known as govushmush buta (paired buta). Buta, an ancient and beloved Oriental motif, likely derives its name from the Persian word “boteh,” meaning a shrub resembling a thistle. The ornamentation of Buta became so popular in Britain that they adopted it from India and incorporated it into their textiles. Consequently, it became known in the West as the Paisley pattern, named after a Scottish town renowned for such fabrics. Buta exemplifies how a simple idea can be uniquely reinterpreted by different cultures. Its meaning varies, symbolizing anything from a pine cone to a palm crown or a flame, all of which have religious significance as symbols of eternal life and immanence. Therefore, giving someone a piece decorated with buta is akin to wishing them a long life and lasting memory.
