Salyan

The Salyan carpet’s key elements serve as the primary inspiration for this jewellery model. Belonging to the Shirvan group of Guba-Shirvan carpet-making, the Salyan carpet boasts a rich and ancient history. Typically, these carpets feature two mythical birds and a central medallion, often surrounded by large octagonal shapes. Beyond symbolizing beauty, traditional beliefs ascribe a cosmic significance to these birds, associating them with the sun.

The city of Salyan was established on the ruins of an ancient settlement at the estuary of the Kura River in the early 14th century and is now a hub for Azerbaijan’s fishing industry. Reflecting this heritage, the Salyan jewellery pieces in the collection depict two fish and waves, symbolizing the Kura River.
