Beylagan
The production of glazed and unglazed pottery in Azerbaijan flourished from the 9th to the 13th centuries. Short texts in the Arabic alphabet were engraved on these pieces, along with images of horses, camels, gazelles, hares, francolins, and both geometric and botanical designs, which have been discovered during excavations in Beylagan and Gabala. One particularly distinctive piece is a green, basket-shaped glazed plate.
The lower parts of many plates bear the seals of various master craftsmen or artisan workshops. For instance, a household pot unearthed during excavations features the phrase ‘made by Ali’ in Arabic, accompanied by mosque design elements. Additionally, the names of two craftsmen, Badal and Sadulla, are engraved on two elegantly designed plates found in Beylagan.
