Chalabi
This piece draws inspiration from the central medallion of Chalabi carpets, originating from Azerbaijan’s Garabagh carpet school. These carpets boast a unique design, featuring a captivating and enigmatic central medallion. Beyond Chalabis, this design also appears in South Azerbaijan’s Barjid carpets, setting them apart from others in the Orient.
The medallion is believed to depict a double-headed bird, a mythical guardian of Paradise in oriental folklore. At the medallion’s heart, a cruciform symbolizes the four primal elements: earth, water, wind, and fire.
