These items draw inspiration from a classic Gonaghkand design, featuring an intricate mosaic of interwoven elements based on conjoined hexagons. The Gonaghkand pattern is one of the most elaborate and complex Caucasian field designs. It is believed to have its origins in the ‘Lotto’ designs seen in 16th-century Turkish Ushak rugs, known for their intricate lattice patterns with conjoined hexagons. These designs were named after their depiction in paintings by the 16th-century artist Lorenzo Lotto. Various bird or animal shapes can be spotted in Gonaghkand patterns; it’s unclear whether these are intentional “trompe l’oeil” or accidental creations by the weaver. In this particular design, you may notice confronting human forms. Gonaghkand carpets are part of the Guba group within Azerbaijan’s Guba-Shirvan carpet-weaving tradition.
