Mir-a-Buteh

This piece draws inspiration from Mir carpets, a quintessential example of the Tabriz carpet tradition. Adorned with the buta (buteh) motif—one of the most ancient and beloved Oriental designs—it captivated the British, who adopted it from India and incorporated it into their textiles. This design became famously known in the West as the Paisley pattern, named after the Scottish town renowned for these fabrics. The term “mir” originates from the honorary extension “mir-e-buteh” or “noble plant.”

The buteh motif is interpreted in a variety of ways, symbolizing elements like the pine cone, palm crown, or flame, each bearing religious significance as a symbol of immanence and eternal life. Thus, gifting someone an item embellished with buteh is akin to wishing them longevity and a lasting memory.
