Mughan
This piece draws inspiration from Mughan carpets, which integrate elements from various regions of Azerbaijan, notably those between the Kura and Araz rivers such as Sabirabad, Jalilabad, Saatli, and Bilasuvar. The centerpiece of these ornate designs is the ‘kehna pattern,’ a hooked motif believed to represent a 12-year cycle. In ancient Turkish calendars, time was measured in days, months, and 12-year periods, with each year linked to a specific animal or constellation. Intriguingly, renowned early Netherlandish artist Hans Memling (1438–1494) featured Mughan carpets in his paintings. These carpets are displayed in numerous museums worldwide.
