S element

This piece draws inspiration from the S element frequently seen in Garabakh border motifs. The S or Z design is a prevalent feature in tribal weaving, often used as a medallion filler and border motif. Some researchers suggest the S symbolizes a serpent or dragon, with origins in the Chinese dragon motif. Others believe the S-shaped designs echo the flow of water, symbolizing a settled, enhanced way of life or, alternatively, fertility and immortality, according to various interpretations.
