S element
This piece is inspired by the ‘S’ element frequently seen in Garabakh border motifs. The ‘S’ or ‘Z’ motif is common in tribal weaving, used as a medallion filler and border design. Some researchers propose that the ‘S’ symbolizes a serpent or dragon, tracing its roots to the Chinese dragon motif. Others suggest that these S-shaped ornaments resemble flowing water, symbolizing a settled, improved way of life, or according to different interpretations, fertility and immortality.
