Three Pomegranates

The pomegranate stands as a powerful symbol across many ancient traditions and major religions. Rich in meaning, it features prominently in numerous cultural narratives. In Judaism, it represents righteousness, with its 613 seeds said to match the 613 mitzvot, or commandments, of the Torah. Additionally, it signifies fruitfulness, knowledge, and wisdom. In Christianity, the pomegranate symbolizes resurrection and the promise of eternal life. In Chinese culture, it is a symbol of fertility due to its abundance of seeds. The Qur’an also references pomegranates, with legends suggesting each holds a seed (aril) from the paradise pomegranate. Across Asia and the Middle East, pomegranates are depicted in carpets, symbolizing fertility.
