Buta with a child

This piece is inspired by a variation of the famous Buta motif called the Balali Buta, or “Buta with a Child.” The Buta is one of the most ancient and beloved oriental motifs, with its name likely derived from the Persian word “boteh,” meaning a shrub resembling a thistle. The British, enamored with the Buta ornament, adopted it from India and replicated it in their textiles. This pattern later became known in the West as Paisley, named after the Scottish town renowned for its fabrics featuring this design. The Buta serves as a fascinating example of how a simple idea can be interpreted differently across cultures. Its meaning ranges from a pine cone to a palm crown to a flame, symbols of immanence and eternal life, imbued with religious significance. Consequently, presenting someone with a Buta-adorned piece is akin to wishing them long life and cherished memories.
