Nakhchivan

This piece is inspired by the ‘Shadda’ pileless carpets traditionally woven in Nakhchivan. Once known in mythology as the first resting place of Noah’s ark, Nakhchivan has a rich history of decorative and applied arts. Towns like Nakhchivan, Ordubad, and Julfa have been centers for wool and silk carpet weaving—both piled and pileless—for centuries. As a Silk Road stop, towers were built to protect the city and its passing merchants from robbers. Situated at trade route intersections, the region’s distinct culture and lifestyle are reflected in the intricate designs of Nakhchivan carpets. Additionally, the piece incorporates motifs from domestic ware unearthed during archaeological excavations in Nakhchivan. Ornaments from the Momine Khatun Mausoleum, crafted by the revered medieval architect Ajami Nakhchivani, inspired a second model dedicated to Nakhchivan.
