S element

This piece draws inspiration from the “S” element often found in Garabagh carpet border motifs. The “S” or “Z” is a typical feature in tribal weaving, serving as both a medallion filler and border design. Some researchers propose that the “S” symbolizes a serpent or dragon, originating from the Chinese dragon motif. Others suggest that S-shaped ornaments resemble a funnelled flow of water, symbolizing a settled, improved lifestyle, or, according to alternate interpretations, representing fertility and immortality.
