Baku
This model draws inspiration from the ancient symbols of Baku: two lions and an ox depicted on the arch of the ‘Gosha Gala Gapilari’ (‘Twin Castle Gates’) at the main entrance of Baku’s old city. The ox represents the ancient city, while the lions symbolize the castle walls’ day and night protection. The piece also features paisley motifs, known as the ‘Buta of Baku’, echoing those found on carpets woven in the region. This widespread eastern design is characteristic of carpets from mountainous areas. While the symbolism is debated, the ‘Buta of Baku’ is often believed to represent fire and eternity. Another version of this model reflects the Shirvanshah Palace, located in the Icheri Sheher Historical-Architectural Reserve, within Baku’s old city.
