In Persian, “huma” translates to “bird of paradise,” and “humayun” means “the fortunate one.” In mythology, the huma was recognized as the state bird. According to legend, when a ruler died, the huma bird would select the next ruler by landing on someone’s shoulder or casting its shadow over them.
