Established in 1991, the Khojaly region is rich in cultural heritage, including the Khojaly-Gadabay (or Ganja-Garabagh) archaeological culture dating from the Late Bronze to Early Iron Age. The area is home to ancient Turkic sites, Albanian temples, mosques, and the 18th-century Askeran Fortress, built by Panah Ali Khan.Khojaly was the site of a tragic massacre on February 25–26, 1992, when Armenian forces killed 613 civilians, including women and children. Many were wounded or taken prisoner, and entire families were destroyed. The region’s cultural identity is symbolized in unique carpets like the Mahbeyli and the depiction of the Phoenix, representing rebirth and resilience.
