Maraza
This piece draws inspiration from the Maraza carpet, one of the earliest examples of the Shirvan carpet. Maraza is located in the Gobustan region, near Gobustan, an extraordinary open-air museum featuring petroglyphs, prehistoric images etched on rocks. Maraza carpets are often referred to as ‘Gobustan’. Carpets from this area boast a unique composition that sets them apart from other Azerbaijani carpets. Butas (paisley symbols) are woven in various forms, along with vertical lines adorned with floral-zoomorphic ornaments, reflecting the culture and lifestyle of the locals. The bird and horned rhombus depicted in this model are typical of the dark-red ‘Maraza’ carpets and, according to local beliefs, offer protection against malignant spirits.
