Arjiman

This piece draws inspiration from the margin strips of “Arjiman” carpets, renowned as exquisite examples of the Shirvan carpet tradition, popular since the Middle Ages. Western travelers have long praised the Shirvans’ artistic value, and European Renaissance painters often featured these carpets in their work. The carpet margins were traditionally believed to safeguard the central images and ornaments, the “heart” of the carpet. The four sides of the Arjiman margin represent the four corners of the world, while the four arcs symbolize ram horns. Rams and sheep (Ovis aries), vital to the livelihood of Eurasian nomads, symbolize fertility and wealth.
