S element

This piece draws inspiration from the “S” element often seen in Garabagh carpet border motifs. The “S” or “Z” shape is a common feature in tribal weaving, serving as a medallion filler motif and border detail. Some researchers believe the “S” symbolizes a serpent or dragon, ultimately derived from Chinese dragon motifs. Others suggest that S-shaped ornaments symbolize the funnelled flow of water, hinting at a settled, harmonious lifestyle or representing fertility and immortality according to different interpretations.
