S element

This exquisite piece draws inspiration from the “S” motif frequently found in the borders of Garabagh carpets. The “S” or “Z” element is prevalent in tribal weaving, utilized both as a medallion filler and border motif. Some researchers propose that the “S” symbolizes a serpent or dragon, originating from the Chinese dragon design. Alternatively, others suggest that S-shaped patterns represent the channelled flow of water, symbolizing a settled and improved way of life, or in other interpretations, fertility and immortality.
