Mir-a-Buteh

This exquisite piece draws inspiration from Mir carpets, a hallmark of the renowned Tabriz carpet school. Adorned with buta (buteh), it features one of the oldest and most cherished Oriental motifs. This design was so admired by the British that they adopted it from India, incorporating it into their textiles. Consequently, it became known in the West as the Paisley pattern, named after the Scottish town celebrated for these fabrics. The term “mir” comes from extending buteh to mir-e-buteh, meaning ‘noble plant.’

The buteh design has been interpreted in various ways, symbolizing anything from a pine cone and palm crown to a flame, all of which carried religious significance as emblems of immanence and eternal life. Thus, gifting someone a piece adorned with buteh is akin to wishing them a long life and enduring legacy.
