S Element
This piece is inspired by the “S” element often seen in the borders of Garabagh carpets. The “S” or “Z” motif is common in tribal weaving, used as a medallion filler and border design. Some researchers believe the “S” symbolizes a serpent or dragon, originating from the Chinese dragon motif. Others suggest that S-shaped ornaments mimic the funnelled flow of water, symbolizing a settled, enriched lifestyle or, according to alternate interpretations, representing fertility and immortality.
