Goychay

This jewelry model pays tribute to the pomegranate, known as the ‘King of Fruits’ and a symbol for numerous religions and cultures. Goychay, located in the Shirvan valley, is a major center for pomegranate cultivation in Azerbaijan. Established in the 15th century to resettle those from Garaman Baylarbaylik (modern-day Turkey), the city also became home to victims of the 19th-century Shamakhi earthquake. Its name, meaning ‘blue river,’ reflects the clarity of the river coursing through it. For centuries, Goychay’s favorable climate and fertile soil have made pomegranates the primary source of income for locals. All known pomegranate varieties thrive here, and the annual ‘Pomegranate Festival’ celebrates this rich cultural heritage during the harvest season.
