Mughan
This design draws inspiration from Mughan carpets, known for combining elements from various Azerbaijani regions nestled between the Kura and Araz rivers, including Sabirabad, Jalilabad, Saatli, and Bilasuvar. The central feature of these ornaments is the distinctive ‘kehna pattern’—a hooked element. Some sources suggest this design represents a 12-year cycle. In ancient Turkish calendars, time was measured not just in days and months but also in these 12-year intervals, each linked to an animal or constellation. Notably, early Dutch artist Hans Memling (1438–1494) incorporated Mughan-style carpets into his paintings. Today, Mughan carpets are showcased in several world-renowned museums.
