Chanta
Square-shaped carpet bags, approximately 30-40 cm on one side, have been traditionally crafted in Azerbaijan. This piece draws inspiration from these bags, adorned with a decorative element called bala (‘small’) kataba, which is a cylindrical or elongated medallion. Items featuring this motif were known as katabali, meaning ‘with kataba.’ The small piece on a clasp-pin is inspired by margin patterns believed to represent an S-symbol. The S-shaped ornaments evoke a funnelled flow of water, symbolizing a settled, improved lifestyle or, alternatively, fertility and immortality.
