S element

This piece draws inspiration from the “S” element frequently seen in Garabagh carpet border motifs. The “S” or “Z” is a common feature in tribal weaving, often used as a filler motif in medallions and borders. Some researchers propose that the “S” symbolizes a serpent or dragon, tracing its origins to the Chinese dragon motif. Others suggest that S-shaped ornaments represent the funnelled flow of water, symbolizing a settled, improved lifestyle or, according to different interpretations, fertility and immortality.
