Wheels of history
This scarf draws inspiration from the Wheels of History jewelry collection by Resm, dedicated to Azerbaijan’s regions. It captures the country’s beauty, showcasing the cultural richness and diversity of each area. Mirroring the jewelry, the scarf features elements and symbols unique to Azerbaijan’s regions, intertwined with their arts, cuisine, history, geography, and folklore.
Symbols from each region run symmetrically through the center. In the middle, the ancient Baku symbols, the two lions and the ox on ‘Gosha Gala Gapilari’ (‘Twin Castle Gates’), mark the entrance of Baku’s old city. Beside the lions, clay pot animal figures from ancient Ganja’s archeological site bear the name of Mahammad Jahan Pahlavan (1172 – 1186), a ruler from the Atabeys period. Birds on the scarf are inspired by Caucasian Albanian stone carvings from 7th-century Mingechevir. Pomegranate trees, the ‘King of Fruits’, symbolically significant in various religions and cultures, also embellish the design.
The four sides of the scarf highlight Shamakhi, Tabriz, Aghsu, and Beylagan. A musician image pays homage to Tabriz miniatures; the Shamakhi carpet’s unique ornament from the Shirvan carpet school; a Beylagan-inspired hunting scene from a 12-13th century glazed plate; and a human face drawing influenced by a paisley-shaped forged copper piece with a carved male face.
This scarf was created with pride in Azerbaijan’s regional diversity and rich cultural heritage.
